To fulfill the mitzvah of telling the story of Exodus, the Haggadah has 3 lines from the Torah. Tzay oo'l'mad. Go forth and learn what plans Lavan the Aramean had for Jacob our father.  While Pharaoh intended to kill only the boys, Lavan sought to uproot all of Jacob's family.

So our story begins with Joseph being taken to Egypt and becomes a trusted aide to Pharaoh.  Joseph's family joins him in Egypt.  Many years later, a new Pharaoh comes to power who doesn't remember Joseph.  He sees the number of Israelites and fears they will rise up and rebel to overthrow him.  So he makes them slaves.
