Leader : God has commanded us to answer these questions for our children. (Deuteronomy 6:20-25, Exodus 12:26-27; 13:8, 14)

We do so with thankful hearts for the answers point to the great and mighty works of God.

Lifting the matzah,  On all other nights, we eat leavened bread, but on Passover, we eat only unleavened bread. When Israel fled from Egypt, they did not have time to let the bread rise.

Lifting or pointing to the maror,  On all other nights, we eat all kinds of vegetables, but on Passover, we eat bitter herbs. This reminds us of the bitterness of slavery, including the bondage of sin.

Lifting or pointing to the charoseth,  On all other nights, we do not dip vegetables even once, and tonight we dip them twice. We have already dipped our parsley in salt water. Later we will dip our maror in charoseth. This mixture represents the mortar and bricks that Israel was forced to make as slaves in Egypt.

On other nights, we eat in routine. Tonight we celebrate because we remember that we are free.
