4 Cups, 4 Promises, 4 Mothers, 4 Questions, 4 Sons

The number 4 is prevalent in the Seder .  We ask 4 questions, read about the 4 sons, remember God's 4  promises and drink 4 cups of wine.

The Talmud connects the 4 cups of wine we drink at the Seder to the 4 promises God made to Israel: to take them out of Egypt, to rescue them, to redeem them, to make them God's people.

In the 16th century, rabbis identified the 4 cups with the for Matriarchs: Sara, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel.
