Freedom is not just a feeling, it’s work. We work to free ourselves, our brothers and sisters and all of our fellow people and creatures from the oppression they suffer. That is the work of holiness. The traditional language for this idea is “Asher Kidshanu Bemitzvotav” “Who made us holy through Her commandments.” The symbol of this freedom is the wine, a juice which has the power to loosen the bonds of our minds.

We fill the first cup of wine and say:

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheynu melech ha'olam boreg peri hagafen.
