There is a plate on the table with an odd number of pieces of matzah in a stack. At this time, we must take out the middle matzah to break it in two pieces. The larger piece will become the Afikoman (which has been translated from ancient Greek for "after dinner fun!" or sometimes "dessert" - either way, dessert is after dinner fun) and hidden. The smaller piece will return to the stack to be shared later. Our after dinner fun will be to find the Afikomen.
