The plagues were, according to the Torah, necessary for liberating the Israelites from Egypt. However, what I find challenging is that G-d continued to "harden" Pharaoh's heart, while at the same time He worsened the plagues. Perhaps it would have been just for G-d to execute the plagues until Pharaoh agreed to free the Israelites, but the fact that He worsened the plagues and caused a reason to worsen the plagues seems wrong. In that sense, the plagues may not have been necessary at all.
