"In early times our ancestors were star-worshippers, but now the All-including brought us near. . . [and took] Abraham from across the river, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan" and showed that God was indivisible. Abraham was inspired to begin a new people in Canaan.

Raise the glass of wine and say:

וְהִיא שֶׁעָמְדָה לַאֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ וְלָֽנוּ

V’hi she-amda l’avoteinu v’lanu.

She [the torah] who stood by our fathers and by us.

The glass of wine is put down.

And Abrahams' descendants, Jacob and his children came to sojourn in Egypt "for there was no pasture for the sheep flock of thy servants, for the famine was heavy in the land of Canaan"

They were strangers there in the land of Egypt. And they asked of Pharoah "may it please thee, let thy servants stay in the land of Goshen." And they were allowed in and sojourned there.

Over the generations, their numbers grew. Pharaoh and the leaders of Egypt grew alarmed by this nation growing within their borders, and they came to enslave them, and forced them to perform hard labor. But the more they were oppressed, they more they increased and spread out, so that the Egyptians came to despise and dread them.

But God heard our cries "And he saw our distress, and our travail, and our oppression and the Lord took us out of Egypt with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror, and with signs and with wonders."

The time the Israelites remained in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years, and on that very day they departed from the land of Egypt. That same night is the watch-night for their descendants throughout the generations.
