Stories are incredibly important to people. Each group of people, no matter how we define the group, has both stories of the group's history and stories that are told by the group.  They are part of what makes a group distinguishable from others.  Jews have many stories, some of which are ancient, some of which are modern, some of which tell a literal history, and some of which tell a mythological history.   We can learn a lot about a group of people from the stories they tell.  One thing we learn about ourselves, as Jews, from the Passover story (among others), is that we believe that we can overcome anything.  Maybe not all of us will make it, but as a group, as a people, we will survive and preserve.
