Is there a conceptual difference between chayim (life) and kiyum (existence)?

Man is certainly a physical being whose requirements are no different from those of any animal: food, drink, rest, etc. Thus he needs kiyum. But the human being requires more; he needs life with meaning, purpose, and a goal.

While bread supports an earthy, physical existence (kiyum), it is the Torah, or that which comes from the mouth of G-d, which sustains an elevated, spiritual life ( chayim ).
