An orange was first put on the seder plate by Susannah Heschel, a Jewish feminist, in the early 1980’s. It represents those within the Jewish community who for so long have been and continue to be marginalized. Originally intended to represent gay men and women, it has come to stand for the larger LGBTQ+ community. Spitting out the seeds of the orange represents spitting out the poison of anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry, and more specifically the bigotry that exists within the Jewish community.
