The blessing over the meal and matzah | motzi matzah |

The familiar hamotzi blessing marks the formal start of the meal. Because we are using matzah instead of bread, we add a blessing celebrating this mitzvah.

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, hamotzi lechem min ha-aretz.

DIRECTIONS:

Lift the matzah plate. EVERYONE RECITE:

We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who brings bread from the earth.

Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu melech ha-olam, ha-motzi lechem ha-aretz.

DIRECTIONS

Put the bottom matzah back and lift the other two matzot and EVERYONE RECITE:

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al achilat matzah.

We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who made us holy through obligations, commanding us to eat matzah.

DIRECTIONS:

Break the top and middle matzah into piece and give to everyone to eat WHILE RECLINING.
