We will fill four cups of wine over the evening. Now we fill the first. We are thankful for the fruitful earth and the sunny and rainy days that made the grapes ripen, for those who farmed the land and harvested the grapes, many of whom are immigrants documented or otherwise, who may not be able to work this growing season for fear of deportation or fear of entering the US. Thinking of these connections we lift our glasses and say together,

Baruch atah adonai, elohenu melech ha-olam boray p'ri hagafen.

Blessed is the power of life that ripens the fruit of the vine
