Karpas Diem

When it comes to Karpas, who is the king of Passover?

The vegetable on your seder plate—whether it's parsley or celery or whatever else you were able to dig up without making another trip to the grocery store—represents spring and rebirth. We dip it in salt water, which represents the tears shed by Israelite slaves in Egypt. We mix the sweet with the bitter, comedy with tragedy. We tell jokes (sometimes really bad jokes) not because we are ignoring life's hardships, but because there is sweetness in their coexistence.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.

We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruits of the earth.
