Why do we distinguish between the hungry ( dichpin ) and the needy ( ditzrich )? Are not the needy hungry? The answer might be that hunger does not mean only a lack of physical nourishment. It can mean hunger for human companionship and human concern. The needy are the pressured, the spiritually confused, the psychologically perplexed, the lonely. At the Seder we offer them an opportunity to share our redemptive experience so that they can take control of their daily lives once again. All of us need food for the body and food for the spirit; the Seder abundantly provides both.
