There are a multitude of reasons why we drink four cups of wine during the Passover seder.

The first of these cups is a drink of red wine that symbolizes freedom. It seems appropriate to drink it on Passover, the time when God freed his people from slavery. The use of red wine represents both royalty and of the Jewish blood shed by the Pharaoh.

The four cups represent the four promises God made to his people.

1 I shall free you from Egypt.

2 I shall deliver you from bondage.

3 I shall redeem you with an outstretched arm.

4 I shall bring you to Me.
