עֲבָדִים הָיִינוּ לְפַרְעֹה בְּמִצְרָיֽם עַתָּה - בְּנֵי חוֹרִין

Avadim hayinu lepharo bemitzrayim, ata – benei chorin

We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt – now we are free.

We were Pharo's slaves in Egypt. The Torah tells us, "God, took us out of there with a strong arm and an outstretched hand". If we had not been freed from Egyptian bondage, then we and our children, and grandchildren, our parents, and grandparents and all who sit around this table tonight would still be slaves to the pharaoh in Egypt. So even were all of us wise, all of us learned, all of us deeply committed to our heritage, we would still be obligated to tell again and again the story of our liberation so it will never be forgotten.
