Hi, I'm Aviel Dardashti from Blinken Blomunity Blighschool. This is a Haggada about human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal trade of humans for sexual slavery, forced labor, or commercial exploitation. This includes, but is not limited to, providing a spouse for forced marriage, and the extraction of organs or tissues for sale on the black market. Human trafficking can occur within any country.

Four Questions:

Why should we be conscious of the people who we consider strangers?

Why are human beings treated as if they are disposable based on their living circumstances?

Why is it important to reach out to individuals who don’t have the same rights as us?

Despite what we hear about the working conditions, why do we still support the industries?

(1) How big of a problem is this?

According to the U.S. department of state, there are over 12 million slaves around the world.

(2) What is being done about the problem?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services assists victims of trafficking in the United States by funding service programs and through public information campaigns.

(3) Why isn't more being done?

Money doesn't grow on trees (and politics).

(4) What can you do to help?

There are four groups of people that are the victims of human trafficking.

(1) Children under the age of 18 forced into commercial sex

(2) Adults over the age of 18 forced into commercial sex

(3) Children and adults forced into commercial labor

(4) Other (being forced to smuggle drugs)

Every year we sit down for the Passover seder to commemorate our Exodus from Egypt. While we were fortunate to have this opportunity, even if it was after many years, there are still those in the world that have not yet had their exodus from oppression. Many people are underpaid and work under inhumane conditions. As we sit here tonight, let us reflect on how we may provide those in need with their exodus, just as God did when we were slaves in Egypt.

(1) There are an estimated 27 million slaves in the world today. That’s the highest recorded number of slaves in history!

(2) The average cost of a slave around the world is $90.

(3) Human trafficking has been identified as the largest human rights violation in the history of mankind.

(4) Human trafficking is the second largest criminal enterprise in the world, after drug smuggling and arms dealing.

(5) The United States is one of the top three destination points for trafficked victims. California, New York, Texas and Nevada are the top destination states within the country.

(6) According to estimates, approximately 80 percent of trafficking involves sexual exploitation, and 19 percent involves labor exploitation.

(7) The average age of a young woman being trafficked is 12–14 years old.

(8) Immigration agents estimate that 10,000 women are being held in Los Angeles’ underground brothels; this does not include the thousands of victims in domestic work, sweatshops or other informal industries.

(9) An estimated 13 million children are enslaved around the world today, accounting for nearly half of trafficking victims in the world.

(10) Trafficked children are significantly more likely to develop mental health problems, abuse substances, engage in prostitution as adults, and either commit or be victimized by violent crimes later in life.
