Happy Passover!

I want to thank everyone here for coming. Tonight, we gather together to celebrate Passover, our holiday of freedom. We will eat a great meal together, enjoy wine, and tell the story of our ancestors’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. We will consider the blessings in our lives, pledge to work harder at freeing those who still suffer, and begin to cast off the things in our own lives that oppress us.

I put this seder together on Haggadot.com and adapted it from the ones I've done in the past.  I hope will be meaningful and not boring.  I'll try to keep it quick.

The entire story of the Haggadah is contained in the Seder plate (קערה ke'ara); everything on it symbolizes an aspect of Exodus:

Zeroa (זרוֹע)a roasted bone, evokes the offering made at the Temple in ancient times.

Beitza (ביצה‎), a boiled egg, symbolizes the circle of life and death.

Maror (מָרוֹר), a bitter herb, reminds us of the bitterness of enslavement.

Charoset (חֲרֽוֹסֶת), a mixture of fruit, nuts, wine and spices, represents the mortar our ancestors used to build the structures of Mitzrayim.

Karpas (כַּרְפַּס), a green vegetable, symbolizes hope and renewal.

Chazeret (חזרת), the bitter herb for the “sandwich” we eat later, following the custom established by Hillel the Elder, as a reminder that our ancestors “ate matzah and bitter herbs together”

The Two-Minute Haggadah : A Passover service for the impatient, by Michael Rubiner

Opening prayers:

Thanks, God, for creating wine. (Drink wine.)

Thanks for creating produce. (Eat parsley.)

Overview: Once we were slaves in Egypt. Now we're free. That's why we're doing this.

Four questions:
1. What's up with the matzoh?
2. What's the deal with horseradish?
3. What's with the dipping of the herbs?
4. What's this whole slouching at the table business?

Answers:
1. When we left Egypt, we were in a hurry. There was no time for making decent bread.
2. Life was bitter, like horseradish.
3. It's called symbolism.
4. Free people get to slouch.

A funny story: Once, these five rabbis talked all night, then it was morning. ( Heat soup now. )

The four kinds of children and how to deal with them:
Wise child—explain Passover.
Simple child—explain Passover slowly.
Silent child—explain Passover loudly.
Wicked child—browbeat in front of the relatives.

Speaking of children: We hid some matzoh. Whoever finds it gets five bucks.

The story of Passover: It's a long time ago. We're slaves in Egypt. Pharaoh is a nightmare. We cry out for help. God brings plagues upon the Egyptians. We escape, bake some matzoh. God parts the Red Sea. We make it through; the Egyptians aren't so lucky. We wander 40 years in the desert, eat manna, get the Torah, wind up in Israel, get a new temple, enjoy several years without being persecuted again. ( Let brisket cool now. )

The 10 Plagues: Blood, Frogs, Lice—you name it.

The singing of "Dayenu":
If God had gotten us out of Egypt and not punished our enemies, it would've been enough. If he'd punished our enemies and not parted the Red Sea, it would've been enough.

If he'd parted the Red Sea—( Remove gefilte fish from refrigerator now. )

Eat matzoh. Drink more wine. Slouch.

We all know about Passover, that holiday when we Jews whip out our flat, cracker-like matzah, talk about the massive exodus from Egypt, and drink a whole lot of Manischewitz wine. As it happens, though, there are a few other things you might want to know about Passover! Here are some facts about the holiday that you probably never knew:

Passover is an oldie. Judaism celebrates a lot of holidays. Some are fairly recent, such as Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, founded only 66 years ago when Israel was declared a state. But the oldest of them all? Passover! The very first Passover was celebrated in Egypt itself more than 3,300 years ago and marked the first holiday the Jews ever celebrated.

The world’s biggest matzah ball was really big.You thought your mother made them well? Well she’s up against some competition. The world largest matzah ball was made in the heart of New York City in 2009. Chef Anthony Sylvestry managed to make a matzah ball measuring 22.9” wide and weighing a whopping 267 lbs!  

Sometimes there are seven foods on the seder plate. The traditional seder plate is a circular plate with six spots on it, each to hold a different symbolic food to be eaten during the Passover meal. In recent years, a new tradition has begun to form – a seder plate with seven spots instead of six. The new seventh food? An orange. The orange is said to signify fruitfulness, and the action of spitting out the seeds represents “spitting out” hate and discrimination in our communities. 

Passover is a day of commemoration.On Passover 2,000 years ago, a nation of Jews escaped Egypt through the splitting of the Red Sea. On Passover 149 years ago, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Many Jewish Americans were in synagogue at the time of the assassination, both to observe Passover and to celebrate the end of the Civil War, and the American Jewish Historical Society notes that synagogue bimahs "were quickly draped in black and, instead of Passover melodies, the congregations chanted Yom Kippur hymns." 

Nepal is home to the world’s largest Passover seder.The world’s largest Passover seder, boasting more than 1,000 participants, is held yearly in Kathmandu, Nepal. Why Nepal? The country is overflowing with young Israeli travelers who have recently finished their army service, and when it comes time for Passover, some want to be reminded of their mom’s chicken soup or experience the familiar crunch of matzah. Other attendees simply hear of this massive event and feel compelled to travel to Nepal to experience the holiday in such a unique way. Rabbis fly in to lead the seder, and tens of participants show up in advance to help prepare for the guests. Now that’s a lot of company!

All Jewish celebrations, from holidays to weddings, include wine as a symbol of our joy – not to mention a practical way to increase that joy. The seder starts with wine and then gives us three more opportunities to refill our cup and drink.

At this point, I will symbolically wash my hands for all of us, without saying the blessing. As I take a moment to wash my hands, imagine that you are washing away all anxiety and stress in your life, and allow yourself to be filled with the hope that the world can be a better place for us all.

Passover, like many of our holidays, combines the celebration of an event from our Jewish memory with a recognition of the cycles of nature. As we remember the liberation from Egypt, we also recognize the stirrings of spring and rebirth happening in the world around us. The symbols on our table bring together elements of both kinds of celebration.

We now take a vegetable parsley, representing our joy at the dawning of spring after our long, long, long, long, cold winter. Most families use a green vegetable, such as parsley or celery, but some families from Eastern Europe have a tradition of using a boiled potato since greens were hard to come by at Passover time. We're using parsley - which we now dip it into salt water, a symbol of the tears our ancestors shed as slaves. Before we eat it, we recite a short blessing:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.

We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruits of the earth.

We look forward to spring and the reawakening of flowers and greenery. They haven’t been lost, just buried beneath the snow, getting ready for reappearance just when we most need them. I think we can all agree that we're ready for Spring.

There are three pieces of matzah stacked on the table. We now break the middle matzah into two pieces. The host should wrap up the larger of the pieces and, at some point between now and the end of dinner, hide it. This piece is called the afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek. After dinner, the children will have to hunt for the afikomen in order to wrap up the meal… and win a prize.

We eat matzah in memory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. As slaves, they had faced many false starts before finally being let go. So when the word of their freedom came, they took whatever dough they had and ran with it before it had the chance to rise, leaving it looking something like matzah.

Uncover and hold up the three pieces of matzah and say:

This is the bread of poverty which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. All who are hungry, come and eat; all who are needy, come and celebrate Passover with us. This year we are here; next year we will be in Israel. This year we are slaves; next year we will be free.

These days, matzah is a special food and we look forward to eating it on Passover. Imagine eating only matzah, or being one of the countless people around the world who do not have enough to eat.

Maggid - Beginning

Maggid is considered to be the most important part of the seder because in this part we tell the story of the Exodus and explain the significance of the ritual. The seder was implemented for the purpose of remembering the liberation from Egypt, so we are fulfilling this purpose here. There are three main components of Maggid:

  • Four Questions - traditionally said by the youngest child present
  • Four Children -commentary on the four types of approaches to the questions
  • Telling of the Exodus story including our ancestors slavery in Egypt

The formal telling of the story of Passover is framed as a discussion with lots of questions and answers. The tradition that the youngest person asks the questions reflects the centrality of involving everyone in the seder. The rabbis who created this set format for the seder gave us the Four Questions to help break the ice in case no one had their own questions (and to embarrass young children):

                                                                                            מַה נִּשְׁתַּנָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מִכָּל הַלֵּילות

Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol haleilot?

Why is this night different from all other nights?

שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכלין חָמֵץ וּמַצָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלּוֹ מצה

Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin chameitz u-matzah. Halaila hazeh kulo matzah.

On all other nights we eat both leavened bread and matzah. Tonight we only eat matzah.

On all other nights we eat either sitting normally or reclining. Tonight we recline.

As we tell the story, we think about it from all angles. Our tradition speaks of four different types of children who might react differently to the Passover seder. It is our job to make our story accessible to all the members of our community, so we think about how we might best reach each type of child: What does the wise child say?

The wise child asks, What are the testimonies and laws which God commanded you? You must teach this child the rules of observing the holiday of Passover.

What does the wicked child say? The wicked child asks, What does this service mean to you? To you and not to himself! Because he takes himself out of the community and misses the point, set this child’s teeth on edge and say to him: “It is because of what God did for me in taking me out of Egypt.” Me, not him. Had that child been there, he would have been left behind.

What does the simple child say? The simple child asks, What is this? To this child, answer plainly: “With a strong hand God took us out of Egypt, where we were slaves.”

What about the child who doesn’t know how to ask a question? Help this child ask. Start telling the story: “It is because of what God did for me in taking me out of Egypt.”

CAST: NARRATOR, JOSEPH, BENJAMIN, PHAROAH, ADVISOR, HEBREW 1, HEBREW 2, HEBREW 3, BOSS, BAT PHAROAH, MOSES, G-D, AARON

NARRATOR: Our story begins in the land of Egypt where Joseph, once a prisoner, is now the Pharaoh’s chief advisor.

 

JOSEPH: So, brother, tell me. How are things back in Israel?

BENJAMIN: Terrible! Our gardens and crops are dying. There is no rain this year. That is why we had to come down to Egypt!

JOSEPH: We don’t have to worry about that. I’ve stored away tons of food in giant warehouses. Pharaoh can feed the people for three years at least, even if we get no rain.

BENJAMIN: But, what does the Pharaoh think of us Hebrews?

JOSEPH: He loves me and would welcome all Hebrews. Bring the entire family! We’ll make a great life here.

 

NARRATOR: So, the Hebrews moved to Egypt, had many children, and lived well. But many years later, after Joseph and his brothers had died, a new Pharaoh rose to power.

 

PHAROAH: Advisor, bring me the latest census report. I want to know all the people over whom I rule!

ADVISOR: Yes, you’re Royal Highness. I have the numbers here.

PHAROAH: Let’s see… Nubians, Midians, yes, very good. Are there really that many Hebrews?

ADVISOR: Yes, your highness! And, they’re growing in number. They are strong workers.

PHAROAH: Do you think that might be a danger? Perhaps they will challenge my rule – make demands, rise up against me!

ADVISOR: Yes, you are right! We must break their spirits!

PHAROAH: Start by forcing them to make more bricks each day. Next, make them haul more rocks. Then, take away their breaks. If that doesn’t break their spirits, we’ll turn to harsher measures.

NARRATOR: The Hebrews struggled to keep up with Pharaoh’s demands.

 

HEBREW 1: My hands are killing me. And my back! I can’t take the pace.

HEBREW 2: We can make a thousand bricks a day—but two thousand? No team can work that hard! We’ll fall over!

HEBREW 3: Get back to work, the boss is coming!

BOSS: Efficiency, people! We have got to make 900 more bricks by sundown! Come on, let’s work faster!

HEBREW 1: We are working as fast as we can, boss.

HEBREW 2: We haven’t had a break all day!

BOSS: And you are not going to get one! Work!

 

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted a baby, a first-born Hebrew male whose sister, at her mother’s request, had sent him down the river in a basket to escape his fate. The child, Moses, was raised with the finest Egypt had to offer.

 

BAT PHAROAH: Here, sweetheart, eat your honey cakes before your flute lesson.

MOSES: I’m so excited about the party this evening.

BAT PHAROAH: Your new robe looks lovely, dear. I just hope that the Pyramid is finished. Your grandfather has the workers working double time just to get the place finished before the great assembly.

MOSES: I heard that the Hebrews were complaining. Why?

BAT PHAROAH: Never mind what goes on outside, sweetheart.

MOSES: I know so little about the world. Someday I’d like to go out of the palace and see how they live.

 

NARRATOR: One day, Moses snuck away to witness the Hebrew’s plight.

 

HEBREW 1: I can’t work. I’m sick! My arms ache from lifting stones!

BOSS: No excuses! This pyramid must be finished by Thursday! Today is Wednesday! So get moving!

HEBREW 1: I can’t work. Please, listen. Have some compassion!

BOSS: Quiet!

HEBREW 2: Give him a break, boss!

HEBREW 3: Don’t get involved!

BOSS: Enough! [Boss pushes Hebrew 2 to the ground.]

HEBREW 3: Stop! One of Pharaoh’s princes is coming!

MOSES: What is happening?

BOSS: Your honor, I’ll give this man the beating he deserves! Watch!

MOSES: No! [Moses hits the Boss, who falls to the ground.]

HEBREW 3: No! What did you do to the boss? We’ll be punished for this!

MOSES: Oh no! What have I done? What have I done?

 

NARRATOR: Moses ran away, far into the wilderness, where he met a shepherd named Jethro and married his daughter Zipporah. One day, taking care of Jethro’s sheep, Moses stumbled upon a burning bush.

 

G-D: Moses, Moses!

MOSES: Who is that? What is happening?

G-D: It is me, the G-d of your ancestors, Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. You must go back to Egypt and ask Pharaoh to let your people leave Egypt! Then you will lead them back to their homeland!

MOSES: How will I do that? The people don’t know me! And, I have no power now that I have run away!

G-D: I will be with you. Take your brother, Aaron. Stand up to Pharaoh!

 

NARRATOR: So Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt to see Pharaoh.

 

PHAROAH: What do you want?

AARON: Please let my people leave Egypt. We need to go outside of the city so that we can pray to G-d in our own way.

PHAROAH: Why not wait for the festival of the pyramids? Then your people can pray with everyone.

MOSES: We do not wish to pray to your gods. We have one G-d, who is mightier than all of your gods.

PHAROAH: You must be joking. The gods have made Egypt a great nation. What has your G-d done for you?

MOSES: You’ll see what our G-d can do! Then you’ll let us go!

PHAROAH: Don’t count on it!

 

NARRATOR: So, G-d sent plagues. Water turned to blood, so fish died, and everyone was thirsty; frogs swarmed every inch of space in Egypt; lice and other bugs crawled to cover the land; wild animals came and destroyed all that was built; disease struck sacred livestock; painful boils broke on the skin of people and animals; hail pelted from the skies; and darkness fell over the land. Still, Pharoah would not let the Hebrews go ... until a fatal illness killed the firstborn child of every Egyptian ...

 

ADVISOR: Your highness, why aren’t our gods protecting us?

PHAROAH: Don’t you see? All we did to the Hebrews is happening to us!

ADVISOR: Maybe their G-d IS powerful!

PHAROAH: Quickly, tell all of my guards to let the Hebrew people go!

 

NARRATOR: And so, Moses, spoke to the people.

 

MOSES: Put on your sandals, we have no time to bake tomorrow’s bread! Tonight we leave Egypt and set out for a new land! Our children, and our children’s children will remember this night! They’ll tell the story of how we stood up to Pharaoh, and how G-d helped us to be free!

AARON: Pharoah’s men are chasing us! He must have changed his mind!

HEBREW 1: But the Red Sea is ahead! Such high waters!

HEBREW 2: How can we possibly cross?

HEBREW 3: I can’t swim!!

G-D: Moses, raise your staff!

 

NARRATOR: Moses did; the waters of the Red Sea parted long enough for the Israelites to cross over onto dry land. And thus ends our play.

The plagues and our subsequent redemption from Egypt are but one example of the care God has shown for us in our history. Had God but done any one of these kindnesses, it would have been enough – dayeinu.
Rachtzah

As we now transition from the formal telling of the Passover story to the celebratory meal (finally!), we once again wash our hands to prepare ourselves. A good meal together with friends and family is itself a sacred act, so we prepare for it just as we prepared for our holiday ritual, recalling the way ancient priests once prepared for service in the Temple.  Again, I will symbolically wash my hands.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו, וְצִוָּנוּ עַל נְטִילַת יָדָֽיִם:

The blessing over the meal and matzah | motzi matzah | מוֹצִיא מַצָּה

The familiar hamotzi blessing marks the formal start of the meal. Because we are using matzah instead of bread, we add a blessing celebrating this mitzvah.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, הַמּוֹצִיא לֶֽחֶם מִן הָאָֽרֶץ

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, hamotzi lechem min ha-aretz.

We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who brings bread from the land.

Dipping the bitter herb in sweet charoset | maror  |מָרוֹר   

  In creating a holiday about the joy of freedom, we turn the story of our bitter history into a sweet celebration. We recognize this by dipping our bitter herbs into the sweet charoset. We don’t totally eradicate the taste of the bitter with the taste of the sweet… but doesn’t the sweet mean more when it’s layered over the bitterness?

Korech: Mixing the Bitter and the Sweet

This is the moment when we eat maror and the charoset on a piece of matzah. What a strange custom to eat something so bitter and something so sweet all in one bite.

Why do we do such a thing? We do it to tell our story. The Jewish people tells our story through our observance of Jewish holidays throughout the year. The holidays of Passover, Chanukah and Purim remind us just how close the Jewish people has come to utter destruction and how we now celebrate our strength and our survival with great joy, remembering God’s help and our persistence, and our own determination to survive.

We tell the same story throughout our lifetime of Jewish rituals. The breaking of a glass at a Jewish wedding reminds us that even in times of life’s greatest joys we remember the sadness of the destruction of the Temple. When we build a home, some Jews leave a part unfinished to remember that even when building something new, we sense the times of tragedy in the Jewish people. And on Passover we mix the sweet charoset with the bitter maror, mixing bitter and sweet of slavery and freedom all in one bite.

Throughout each year and throughout our lifetimes, we challenge ourselves to remember that even in times of strength, it is better to sense our vulnerability, rather than bask in our success. We all have memories of times in which bitter and sweet were mixed in our lives, all in the same bite. Judaism says, sometimes life is like that. We can celebrate and mourn all at the same time.

Opening the Door for Elijah

Now, we're going to take the wine/juice that we've poured and each add to Elijah's cup.

Now let's do the same from our water glasses to fill Miriam's cup.

Combining our actions together is what will help Elijah come to ourworld.

We set an extra place for Elijah and we'll open the door and invite him in later. Miriam was Moses's sister and we honor her for how she helped Moses which made our story possible today.

There is a word in Hebrew — Teshuvah — that means return. It is an acknowledgement that there is always a chance for forgiveness, redemption and change. Our traditions teach that Passover is open to all. Everyone is welcome at this table. There is always room. Because no one is ever turned away, there is always an opportunity for a rebirth of spirit.

As a sign of hospitality to all, we open the door to our homes and symbolically invite anyone who wants to join us to come inside.

At this point, the children open the door.

As we come to the end of the seder, we drink one more glass of wine. With this final cup, we give thanks for the experience of celebrating Passover together, for the traditions that help inform our daily lives and guide our actions and aspirations.

This year whilst drinking the fourth cup of wine I want you to think about those are plagued by indifference, by a lack of interest in the oppression of others, by a lack of interest in understanding the wrongs in the world and by apathy.
 

Conclusion

And now before we eat our meal, as is our family tradition, let's take a moment to remember those who are not longer with us.
